The idea of autonomous vehicles that can drive by themselves had been a concept of science fiction for a long time. The auto industry however has been working for years to advance self driving technology. It started slow, with vehicles that first were able to park themselves but in recent years leaps and bounds have been made on the technology.
Just has Volvo partnered with the Swedish Government to test their first fleet of self driving vehicles on public roads. It has been dubbed the Volvo Drive Me project and it will be kicking off in 2014 with a fleet of 100 cars that can navigate without nay driver action.
The models Volvo will provide are S60 models equipped with the technology. Customers who have joined the project are tasked to test the effects of self driving cars in a number of ways. They will be able to enable the autonomous driving feature using a button on the steering wheel and Volvo wants them to examine and quantify the economic benefits, effect on traffic flow, customer experience, safety and the overall technology. These are really exciting times and this project makes Volvo one of a handful of companies with a working autonomous vehicle.
While they have these model on the road in Sweden right now, it may still be a while before this S60 models make it to production for the world market. In the meantime, Volvo of Stamford invites you to our dealership location to check out the current selection of new Volvo vehicles. Our team will be happy to answer any questions you may have and set you up for a test drive. You'll have to do the driving though.
