Making automobiles that are simple and enjoyable to drive is a priority for Volvo. This includes the new models sitting within our Stamford, CT showroom, and also the commercial trucks Volvo builds. To exhibit how easy Volvos are to drive, the auto maker created an experiment that allowed a hamster to drive one.
Yes, that is correct. A
hamster. Creating a special hamster wheel, they connected it to the
steering wheel of a 15-ton commercial truck. To make it more interesting
they did this inside a quarry, facing uphill with sheer cliffs on both
side of the road.
The small
rodent was solely responsible for steering, and was directed in the
wheel by a carrot, making it turn the wheel the correct direction. A
human counterpart controlled the brake and accelerator. The whole event
produced some intense drama, where there were a couple of moments when
it appeared the truck may fall off into the quarry. In the end, the 15
ton truck was steered all the way to the top of the quarry safely, by a
hamster.
This was all done to prove the power and ease in which the dynamic steering option performs on Volvo trucks. Motorists using this system will receive a responsive and intuitive system that will make everybody feel safe and sound.
