No doubt about it, fuel efficiency and vehicle emissions is a huge concern for the auto industry today and the population at large. It is a point of such importance, automakers are looking for every possible way they can help make vehicles cleaner and more efficient. Volvo Group, the truck division of Volvo, is working with an initiative called the eCoMove to do just that.

EcoMove is a European research project that has been underway for the past three years. The goal of the project is to research new methods drivers can use to make their driving habits as efficient as possible. It will draw to a close in November and a number of interesting strategies for reduced fuel consumption have been conceived thus far.

The use of data has been one of the strategies. To help truck drivers change they way they drive, technology was used to carefully dissect how they drive. A special screen was mounted on the dashboard that informed drivers of the efficiency of their shifting, braking and acceleration.

Driving a truck takes special planning and fore thought. Since they take more time to accelerate and stop, drivers need to know where they are going and how long it will take them to get there. GPS became very useful for this purpose.  It gave drivers more time to plan their route and adjust for changes.

The project has proven to be a success so far. Volvo has seen a 10-15% reduction in fuel use. That reduction in fuel consumption can translate to huge fuel savings for companies that rely on trucks for transportation, not to mention it is better for the environment. This is just another example of Volvo working to make the automotive world more efficient.
